What is the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS)?
The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS), formerly known as ECO+, is a government initiative aimed at improving home insulation efficiency in British households. Administered by Ofgem, this £1 billion scheme will run until March 2026 and is designed to help around 300,000 households reduce energy bills and improve energy efficiency by providing free or cheaper insulation
How does it work?
To qualify, households typically need an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of D to G and fall within specific council tax bands (A-D in England, A-E in Scotland and Wales). The scheme is available to homeowners, landlords, and tenants, with additional eligibility for those receiving certain benefits like Income Support, Universal Credit, or Pension Credit.
The types of insulation covered include cavity wall insulation, loft insulation, roof insulation, and internal wall insulation, among others. If eligible, energy suppliers will arrange an assessment and installation of the most suitable insulation measure for the home
Through the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS), you can significantly enhance your home’s energy efficiency. Improved insulation reduces heat loss, allowing your home to maintain a stable temperature with less energy, making it more efficient to heat and cool throughout the year.
By insulating your home under the GBIS, you’ll notice a reduction in energy consumption, which translates into lower energy bills. With less heat escaping, your heating system won’t need to work as hard, saving you money on your utility costs month after month.
Better insulation helps regulate your home’s internal temperature, ensuring a warmer, more comfortable environment in colder months and a cooler home during summer. This consistent indoor climate makes your home a more pleasant place to live.
Energy-efficient homes are in high demand. By upgrading your insulation, you increase your property’s value, making it more attractive to potential buyers. This investment not only benefits your day-to-day living but also adds value if you decide to sell in the future.
With improved insulation, your home requires less energy to stay warm, which reduces your overall carbon footprint. By cutting down on energy consumption, you’re helping to lower greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to a more sustainable environment.
A well-insulated home offers a healthier living environment by maintaining stable temperatures and reducing dampness and drafts. This can help lower the risk of respiratory issues, improve overall air quality, and create a safer and healthier home for you and your family.
