CAN WE STILL INSTALL A NEW GAS BOILER?
Yes. From 2025, new homes will need to find low carbon alternatives to the traditional gas boiler, such as an air source heat pump. But as things stand you can still replace old gas boilers with new.
The government has said that it intends to start phasing out gas boilers in all homes from 2035, but although this means you won’t be able to install a new gas boiler in your home from 2035, you’ll be able to keep the system you have until it reaches the end of its working life.
It’s important to note that there’s no legislation for any of this at present. It’s an intention, not a law.

HOW DOES A CONDENSING BOILER WORK?
If you already have a gas boiler, you’ll know that waste gases are released into the atmosphere via a flue on the side or roof of your home. But there’s energy in those gases. A condensing boiler captures them and recycles them into the system.
All gas boilers sold in the UK must now be condensing boilers.
SHOULD WE CHANGE OUR BOILER?
Modern condenser boilers (when set up correctly) are up to 98% efficient. That means of the total energy used by the boiler, up to 98% goes towards heating. As little as 2% is lost to feeding the boiler itself.
Older boilers didn’t use condensing technology and are far less efficient. A 20-year-old boiler is around 75% efficient. Older boilers could be as little as 60% efficient, meaning that a huge chunk of the money you spend on your energy is completely wasted.

How much you’ll save depends on the type of home you live in, the age and efficiency of your existing boiler and whether you fit thermostatic radiator controls on each radiator. We can give you a better idea of how much you’ll save when you contact us but, as just one example, savings on a semi-detached house with a boiler that’s currently 70% efficient or less could be around £400 per year.

A new gas boiler may not be as eco-friendly as installing a ground source heat pump, but it’s a lot more energy efficient than your old boiler, which means that even if you stick with gas, you’ll still reduce your carbon footprint.
Compact & Convenient
If your existing boiler is almost the size of a tumble dryer, you’re in for a surprise. New boilers are close to half the size of their older predecessors, which means it’s easier to find a convenient space for them and you regain room in your home.
CAN WE GET A UK GOVERNMENT GRANT FOR A NEW GAS BOILER?
You might have heard that, through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, the UK government is putting its weight behind ground and air source heat pumps, so it’s harder to get a free grant for a gas boiler.
That’s true, but under the Energy Company Obligation, if you’re a homeowner or tenant* in an energy inefficient home and you get benefits including Child Tax Credit, Universal Credit, Pension Guarantee Credit, Child Benefit or Housing Benefit, you may get help with the cost of replacing your gas boiler.
