Stay Warm, Save Money: Benefits of Energystore Superbead 33 Cavity Wall Insulation
What does a wall cavity do?
Your home has two brick ‘skins’. There’s the inner skin, which is the one you then plaster, wallpaper and paint. And there’s the outer skin, which gets the full force of the elements. Between the two there’s a cavity, a gap that enables air to circulate and ensure damp from outside can’t easily track through to affect your home inside. For many years, the gap was also an insulator (like the gap between two panes of double glazing), helping to keep more of a home’s warmth within the home.
Why do you need cavity wall insulation?
Because the cavity between the two skins of your home isn’t actually a very effective insulator. It’s a basic law of physics that heat will always flow from a warm area to a cold one. The colder the conditions outside, the faster warmth will escape. The cavity between the walls of your home slows that process, but cavity wall insulation will slow it further. The better your cavity wall insulation, the slower that rate of energy escape.
And the more you can prevent energy escaping your home, the cheaper your energy bills will be, and the warmer you’ll feel on the coldest days.
Why energystore superbead?
The core benefit of cavity wall insulation is that it keeps more of your warmth in your home in the coldest months, so your home is a more comfortable place to be, while cutting energy costs.
But what most people don’t know is that not all cavity wall insulation is the same. It isn’t all the same in terms of construction, application or performance, and that can make a big difference to its effectiveness.
Every home is different, but a typical uninsulated home with a cavity wall will have a thermal conductivity of around 1.5 Wm/K. The challenge for any quality cavity wall insulation is to reduce that figure. The lower the figure, the less energy will be lost through the walls.
All cavity wall insulation should improve on 1.5 Wm/K. Some reach 0.5 Wm/K. But energystore Superbead insulates better, achieving thermal conductivity to BS EN ISO 10456 & BS EN 12667 of just 0.033 Wm/K.
Other cavity wall insulation benefits
We’ve explored the core benefit of cavity wall insulation (lower bills from less lost heat) and you can find more general cavity wall insulation benefits here. But beyond these, energystore Superbead offers even more advantages.
Moisture resistance
Poorly installed cavity wall insulation can often lead to damp because the installers block airbricks, grilles and vents. But it’s also true that some inferior cavity wall insulation products absorb moisture. That makes them poorer insulators. But it can also result in damp and mould.
The closed cell EPS technology of energystore Superbead means it doesn’t absorb moisture, so it keeps insulating your home effectively.
More than cavities
As the name suggests, most cavity wall insulation is only suitable for cavity walls. But Superbead satisfies Part E of building regulations, meaning it can also be used in party walls (where it can act as a powerfully effective sound as well as thermal insulator). It’s accredited for use in timber frames. And it has been patented for use underneath beam & block floors.
Zero slump
One of the problems presented by inferior cavity wall products is the issue of slump. Sometimes, as a product settles, it leaves areas of the cavity uninsulated. Worse still, if the insulation absorbs water, any slump will leave the upper part of the wall uninsulated, and the lower part of the wall packed with what effectively becomes a wet sponge.
We’ve already established that energystore Superbead doesn’t absorb moisture, so wet slump can’t be an issue. And thanks to an innovative adhesive, dry slump doesn’t happen either. So when it’s poured into your walls and floor, it stays where we put it, so it can keep doing its job.
Zero waste
Choose energystore Superbead, and as an expert installer we’ll use only the exact amount we need at your property. So there’s no waste to dispose of, which makes this a cleaner insulation option.
A more sustainable cavity wall insulator
A final benefit of cavity wall insulation that we’re not sure any other manufacturer can match. We’re all more concerned with the sustainability of the products we buy. So energystore Superbead carried out a full, independent lifecycle assessment to understand the full carbon impact of choosing it.
The results were clear: “Compared to other insulation studies, superbead had the lowest embodied emissions per functional unit.” [1]
